4/5/2017 RULES by Cynthia Lord. I've read through Chapters 6-9 / pages 59-144. I keep turning pages, half remembering to take notes, half wanting to know what is going to go through Catherine's head about her brother David; her own emotions about feeling second to her brother; when it comes to spending time with Dad; doing things she wants to do instead of babysittng when mom tells her to; her new neighbor friend Kristi; and Jason at the OT center. As I read each page, I find myself pondering about students I see, hear and interact with in school and wonder what is going through their minds where I can relate very well with Catherine.

“When the tape lies flat and tight, I slide Frog and Toad Together into my cassette player and push PLAY.” (Lord, 2006, p. 83) I chose this particular piece because I wanted to display a cassette recorder that is an electronic device not commonly used with kids these days to listen to a story; most are utilizing iPads, laptops, or even their personal Smartphones.

Hi Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your choice of image! It's amazing to think about the things we take for granted today, like listening to music on a smartphone, that we didn't have ten or fifteen years ago. For example, a class I observed the other day was learning about what the world was like in 1999. They're about to start studying a podcast that covers an event that took place in that year, so they needed some context. It was crazy to hear their reactions to what life was like, because most of them were born in '99 or 2000.
Great image to support your quote from the text--it really brings the words to life for kids who don't know what a portable cassette player is or looks like.
Thanks!
